Sample cards tend to be the choice for carpets, vinyl, HPL and hard surfaces while swatches are found more frequently in product sampling marketing presentation for fabric.
Of course fabric is generally a more tactile product so you can see the attraction and it is nice to feel the quality of the material between your fingers, although depending on who the end user will be really does have an impact on these decisions. The problem with carpet swatches and fabric swatches is that they can easily be inadvertently put away in a drawer as they do not store very easily unless part of a larger point of sale unit.
Options for this scenario are to build the swatch into a box or paper over board / book cloth over board case, alternatively affixing the samples in a permanent or removable way into a sample card. Clear advantages of boxes, cases and sample cards are that they are stored on shelves where they can be easily seen and located by the end users. Also enabling multiple ranges to be kept together increasing shelf presence not just for your range but for your brand in general.
